Eastern gray squirrel
Eastern gray squirrels can commonly be seen leaping from tree to tree or home to home. They are a species of tree squirrel and typically only live in areas where trees are present. Eastern gray squirrels can be problematic for homeowners living in both suburban and rural areas.
As people have expanded where they live squirrels have had to become more creative where they live and have become a major problem inside the attics, crawl spaces, and behind wall voids of homes and businesses. Adult Eastern gray squirrels range in size from 6-8 inches (without tail) and are gray in color with a white underbelly. They have a distinctive bushy tail that they use to help balance themselves.
Southern flying squirrel
Despite their name, they don’t actually fly like a bird, instead they jump and then glide from tree to tree or house to house with the help of a special membrane that runs between their front and back legs. Flying squirrels are omnivores and will feed on a variety of items including seeds, nuts, fruit, and insects; some species will even feed on eggs and small birds.
Flying squirrels have a very similar appearance to tree squirrels. They have grayish-brown fur with a gray or white under-belly; adults can range in size from 5-6 inches in length (without tail). Flying squirrels have large black eyes which allow them to have excellent night vision.
Dangers Associated With Squirrels
Squirrels can cause damage to the walls and insulation inside your home. They can also introduce other pests such as fleas and mites. Like any wild animal, if squirrels feel threatened, they can bite or scratch and transmit disease.
Stopping squirrels from living and traveling through the trees on your property is not practical, but there are steps that you can take to stop them from using your home as a nesting site.
Fix any large cracks or gaps in your home’s foundation or exterior walls; make sure that any chimneys have tight fitting caps on them and that roof shingles are in place. Also make sure that soffits are intact and that vent covers are secure.
It is also a good idea to trim trees and other landscaping a good distance away from the exterior of your home. Place bird feeders on your property away from the outside or your house; and no matter how cute you may think they are, don’t purposely feed squirrels.
Removing squirrels from your home and property should only be done by an animal control expert; after all, they are wild animals and do pose the risk of disease. The pros at ChemTec know all the hiding spots in your home that squirrels like to frequent and can remove them safely and humanely through our animal control services.
