Pantry Pest Identification:

Pantry pests are a group of pests that are typically found contaminating dry food goods that are found in kitchen and pantry areas. The most common way that they enter into a household is through a product purchased from a store that is already infested with pantry pest eggs or larvae. Common pantry pests include:

Indian meal moths

Indian meal moths are a pest found in grocery stores. Typically, they feed on items that include: dried fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, chocolate, bird seed, dog food, and powdered milk. They have gray bodies and distinctive copper-reddish coloring on the outer part of their wings; adults are capable of flight and are attracted to light.

Saw tooth grain beetles

Saw tooth grain beetles have a flat body with 6 tiny projections just behind their head that give them their name. They do not fly and are not attracted to light. These beetles are common pests in homes and commercial facilities. They feed on cereal, flour, pet food, bird seeds, nuts, spices, drugs, and tobacco.

Flour beetles

There are many species of flour beetles. The two most common species are the confused flour beetle and the red flour beetle. Flour beetles feed on flour and cereal products; they are common in homes, grocery stores, mills, and food processing facilities.

Pantry Pest Prevention:

There are many things that you can do to help stop pantry pests from taking over our home and kitchen. The most important thing is to inspect any food packaging before purchasing the item. Inspect for any rips or holes and pick a different package if any are found. In your home it is a good idea to transfer cereals, flour, and other dry goods into containers with sealed lids instead of keeping them in their original packaging. Routinely, look through your pantry and rotate any dry goods, and get rid of older or expired items.

To prevent adults from getting into your home, inspect the exterior of your home and make sure to caulk gaps around windows and doors. Finally, make sure that any screens in windows and doors are completely intact.

The 3 most common pantry pests are the Indian meal moth, the saw tooth grain beetle and the flour beetle. The small pests most usually come along into your home with your food.
