Mosquito Identification

The mosquito’s body is mostly gray in color and is covered with scales that can be whitish, green, or iridescent blue in color; adults can grow to be ¼-3/8th of an inch in length.  Mosquitoes only have one pair of wings; they have long thin legs, and a long narrow proboscis (nose) that they use to feed on blood and other food sources with.

Mosquitoes are attracted to any area that provides them with easy access to water and food sources.  Females lay their eggs on the surface of standing water; bird baths, wading pools, wheel barrows, tin cans, pet bowls, clogged gutters, and even very moist soil are all examples of where they will lay their eggs.

It is only the female mosquito that “bites” people and other animals in order to draw out their blood to feed on it.  The female requires the proteins found in the blood to create her eggs.  Both females and males will feed on items that include nectar, honeydew, and plant sugars.

Dangers Associated With Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are dangerous because they have the ability to carry and transmit serious diseases including West Nile Virus and Zika virus.   Click here for the results of New Jersey’s weekly WNV testing and here to visit the Zika virus section of the Center for Disease Control and Preventions website.

Mosquito Prevention

There is no way to completely prevent mosquitoes from getting onto your property, they will travel many miles in order to find a blood source.  Even though you can’t completely eliminate mosquitoes from your life, steps should be taken to limit their numbers; not only because they are super annoying and will cause itchy raised welts on your skin, but because they carry and transmit some serious diseases including West Nile Virus.

There are many things that you can do as a homeowner to help limit mosquito numbers found on your property.  The most effective way to deter mosquitoes is to get rid of as much standing water on your property as you can; store wheel barrows, baby pools, and other like items upside down, regularly change the water in pet bowls, and make sure that your gutters are clean and draining rain water away from your home.

It is a good idea to keep your lawn trimmed short; mosquitoes like to hide in tall grasses during the heat of the day.  Along the same lines, it is helpful to reduce the amount of landscaping and vegetation that is located on your property, especially flowering plants that can act as a food source for mosquitoes.  It is also important to make sure exterior doors and windows seal tightly and that all screens are completely intact to prevent mosquitoes from gaining access inside of your home.

Mosquitos are know to carry many dangerous viruses and diseases. Only the female mosquito bites and she lays her eggs in standing water.
