Clothes Moth Identification

Adult clothes moths have long narrow wings that are buff-yellow in color.  Their front wings have 3 dark spots and their hind wings are fringed appearing with long hairs coming off them.  From wing tip to wing tip adult clothes moths can grow to be between 3/8th and ½ of an inch in length.  The clothes moth larvae are about ½ of an inch in length, have a worm-like appearance, and are whitish in color with a black or brown head.

Despite their name, clothes moths don’t just feed on shirts and pants, they feed on a variety of natural fibers that include: hair, fur, silk, felt, carpets, and wool.  It is the larva (caterpillar) stage that feeds on these items and is responsible for damaging items located within your home.

Dangers Associated With Clothes Moths

The clothes moth is not a danger to people, pets or structures. The danger comes from their ability to damage clothing and other fabrics while feeding.

Moth Prevention

Preventing clothes moths can be tricky, but there are several things that you can do to help deter these pests from feeding on fabric items located within your home.  Ensure that any clothing which will be stored is freshly washed and free of any debris; store clothing in sealed plastic containers with locking lids.  Furs should be stored in cold storage (less than 40 degrees); it is also helpful to make sure that humidity levels in the basement and other storage areas are kept low by using de-humidifiers or air-conditioners.  Regularly vacuuming your home to remove pet hair, dander, and dust can also help to stop problems with clothes moths.

Clothes moths enter homes through cracks and crevices in foundations and through gaps around windows and doors.  Inspecting your home and sealing any openings can help to stop them from getting inside.  It is also important to inspect any used furniture or clothing items for signs of clothes moths before bringing them into your home.
