As a common pest in the eastern United States, crickets are noted for carrying a number of diseases that can be transferred through their bite, physical contact, or waste. Once they’ve infested your home, they can be difficult to remove. However, there are steps you can take to make your property safe again.

Read on to learn more about cricket pest control and how to stop crickets from entering your home

What Does a Cricket Look Like?

The first step for effective cricket pest control in New Jersey is to learn to identify what kind of crickets you are dealing with. Listed below is information about two of the most common crickets found in the Garden State.

House Crickets

House crickets are known for the loud high-pitched sounds the males create by rubbing their forewings together at night.  House crickets reproduce quickly, meaning a small infestation in your home can quickly turn into a very large nightmare.

House crickets are yellow-brown in color and have 3 distinctive dark bands going across their heads. These crickets are winged and can range in size from ¾ to ⅞  of an inch in length.

Cave Crickets

As their name suggests, cave crickets are commonly found living inside caves and other dark, damp areas in NJ. They like to hide under piles of leaves, under woodpiles, in basements, and in crawl spaces.  Cave crickets are light brown to dark brown in color with some dark banding on their bodies.

Cave crickets in NJ can range in size from ½ – 1½ inches in length. They have enlarged hind legs, are wingless, have a humpbacked appearance, and long antennae they use to help them travel through the dark environments they live in.

Dangers Associated with Crickets

Crickets are not only dangerous for the items located within your home, but also to everyone living in it. They are scavengers, feeding on and damaging items such as clothing, wallpaper, small plants, and furniture.

As stated above, crickets are well-known for spreading diseases. If you notice that you have a cricket infestation, it is highly recommended that you call an extermination service.

Cricket Prevention

How can you stop crickets from entering your home? Crickets most often enter homes when the weather becomes too hot and dry outside. Making changes around your property like removing piles of organic debris and making sure to place woodpiles a good distance away from your home can help to limit cricket numbers on your property.

It is important to inspect the exterior of your home and make sure that:

  • Any cracks or holes in the foundation are sealed
  • All gaps around doors and windows are caulked
  • All door sweeps are installed underneath doors
  • Any spaces found around utilities entering your home are sealed

Using dehumidifiers to reduce humidity levels in storage areas is also a good prevention tactic, along with limiting any clutter in those areas.

Crickets don’t generally come indoors until the temperatures drop in the fall. During the cold winter months they enter a deep hibernation and some even survive being frozen! Some crickets have a short life span and only live during the warmer months.
