Silverfish are a year round pest concern.

Silverfish Identification

Silverfish are a type of nuisance pests that enter into homes when they are searching for a suitable environment to live in that has easy access to food sources. Silverfish require a high humidity environment to survive; therefore, they can be found infesting bathrooms, crawl spaces, attics spaces, and areas underneath sinks. Silverfish aren’t picky eaters as long as what they are eating contain starches and/or polysaccharides. Examples include: glue, human hair, dandruff, sugar, wallpaper, and sugary items.

Silverfish are named for their fast “fish-like” movements and because of the silverfish-blue to brown “scales” that cover their bodies. Adult silverfish range in size from ½ to ¾ of an inch in length and have an elongated teardrop shaped body. They are wingless, have antennae, and three long bristle-like appendages coming off their backend. These appendages are almost as long as their body.

Dangers Associated With Silverfish

Silverfish are not a danger to you or your pets; they do not bite or sting. Silverfish are considered to be nuisance pests, but should still be removed from your home as quickly as possible because their presence can lead to food in your home becoming contaminated and personal items becoming damaged.

Silverfish Prevention

The easiest way to prevent silverfish from infesting your home is to reduce the humidity levels through the use of dehumidifiers or air-conditioners, especially in areas like attics, crawlspaces, and basements. It is also beneficial to wipe out sinks and tubs and to fix leaky fixtures and pipes found in and around your home. A regular routine of vacuuming and dusting is helpful as well. Seal any cracks or gaps in your home's foundation and caulk gaps found around exterior windows and doors to help prevent them from gaining access to your home.
