tiny cat flea in an infested home

Fleas are a hitch-hiking parasite that feed from the blood of mammals. Their microscopic eggs do not need their mother to hatch so an infestation can last and last.

While fleas may seem to have more of a presence in the warmer months of the year, they really are a concern all year long. Prevention measures should always be in place.

Flea Identification

Fleas are a type of parasitic pest that feed on the blood of mammals, preferring furry species like dogs, cats, rodents, deer, raccoons and other wild animals.

Adult fleas are a shiny and dark brownish-red color.  They are wingless, and have a flattened hard body.  Even though they are wingless they can move very quickly by using their long and powerful back legs that allow them to have a 6-8 inch vertical jump.  Fleas are very small in size, only growing to be between 1/12th-1/6th of an inch in length.

Dangers Associated With Fleas

Fleas are a dangerous parasite because they can carry and transmit a wide variety of diseases (plague, murine typhus) and parasites (tapeworm) that can affect both people and their pets.

Flea Prevention

Preventing fleas can be a difficult task.  Not only can they come into your home on your pets, they can come in on people too.  They are often introduced onto your property by wild animals and then once on your property they can easily jump onto you, your pets, or your family and hitch a ride into your home.

The best prevention against fleas is to make sure that all pets are treated with a flea control product under the guidance of their veterinarian.  It is also important to regularly vacuum areas that your pets spend time in and wash their bedding often.

It is helpful to deter wild animals from your property by not purposely feeding them with bird feeders, or other types of feeding stations.  After you have spent time outdoors inspect your clothing for fleas before coming back into your home.

Flea Treatment

Once fleas have entered into a home they can be extremely difficult to get rid of on your own.  While there are many DIY flea control products available, they are often ineffective and if not used or placed properly, can be very dangerous for you, your family, and pets to be around.

The best way to control fleas is with the help of a professional pest control expert.  At ChemTec we can provide you with a customized flea control program that is designed around your home’s  needs. Contact us today for more information on how the pros at ChemTec can work with you to safely and effectively get rid of a flea infestation from your home.
