You may have noticed over the last few days that the temperatures have started to take a nosedive. Winter is well on its way. Looking out the window at the frost covered ground you might start thinking about pulling out the family’s winter gear tucked away in the back of your closet. You reach in and start bringing out the boxes full of jackets, sweaters, hats, and mittens. When you haul them out and start sorting through them, you might notice some fraying in your son’s favorite sweater that you made for him; and when you open it up, there is a big hole in the sleeve. When you dig through the rest there are socks, hats, and other sweaters with similar damage. Your heart begins racing when you realize just how much you will be spending to replace it all. If this sounds at all familiar, you might have been infested with clothes moths.

These moths are not the ones that you see buzzing around your porch light in the summer. These pests live in dark places like attics and closets feeding on your stored winter garments. The adult clothes moths are small, buff-colored moths that you might see, but it is the larvae of the clothes moth that is the culprit. These hatchlings of the clothes moth are around half an inch long and white. They have voracious appetites and are partial to wool, hair, fur, silk, felt, and feathers too. This leaves stored clothing, bedding, and even pillows at risk of damage. Unchecked, these moths will keep laying their eggs, hatching, and eating their way through your entire wardrobe.
