If you live in New Jersey, then you know that mosquitoes can be a real pain in the neck during the summer time. In fact, they can be so bad that they become a pain in the leg, the side, the arm, the feet…and pretty much anywhere else those sneaky little biters choose to pierce your skin. But don’t worry because there are several very good ways you can reduce your chances of being bitten by mosquitoes this summer.

Did you know that mosquitoes are actually the most deadly creatures on earth? They may carry any number of deadly diseases including West Nile, malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, encephalitis and of course Zika virus. Did you know that mosquitoes can only fly at speeds between 1 and 1.5 miles per hour? How about the fact that all mosquitoes require water to breed? And two more things, an adult mosquito may live up to six months, and they can detect carbon dioxide from 75 feet away! Keep these facts in mind as we explore the ways you can reduce the mosquito population on your property, and your chances of being bitten, this summer.

Reduce Mosquitoes In Or Around Your Home

  • Screens: Carefully check all of your window and door screens and make sure that they are all present and in good repair. If needed, replace damaged screens or purchase repair materials at your local hardware store. There are many informational videos online that explain how to do your own screen repairs.
  • Outside water sources: Explore your property and discover all the places where water collects. It only takes a tiny bit of water for a female mosquito to lay her eggs. Remove all lawn clutter that can hold water when it rains. Fix obstructed gutters and leaky spigots. And reduce areas of shade that do not dry out after a rainfall. Keeping your property as dry as possible can go a long way in keeping the mosquito population down.
  • Fans: Strategically place fans outside if you plan to spend time lounging, barbecuing, working, or doing anything else outside. Remember, mosquitoes aren’t very strong flyers, so a bit of a breeze will help immensely to keep those little biters from landing on your and getting a blood meal.

Reduce Mosquito Bites When You Are Out And About

  • Clothing choices: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to help keep mosquitoes from biting. Be aware, however, that mosquitoes can bite through some fabrics, especially if it is a thin fabric and it is stuck to your skin. Also, try to wear light colors, it is harder for mosquitoes to see you. They use a contrast of light and dark to be able to lock onto you; wearing light colors helps make you more invisible to them.
  • Mosquito repellent: Use an insect repellent that has either DEET or oil of lemon eucalyptus. If you do not wish to spray this directly on your skin, consider applying it to your clothing. This will go a long way towards reducing bites, if you are going to be out in the woods, at the beach, or anywhere else there may be mosquitoes present.
  • Times to exercise: If you exercise outside, be aware that sweat is a big attractant to mosquitoes, and that mosquitoes are most active early, and late, in the day. If you wish to exercise outside, consider doing it midday. You may sweat a bit more, but you will end up with fewer bites because all those mosquitoes will be hiding out waiting for cooler temperatures to venture out.

Professional Mosquito Prevention

If you really want to reduce the mosquitoes on your property, and in nearby properties, consider having professional mosquito reduction services. ChemTec Pest Control will assist in reducing mosquitoes by removing breeding sites, or treating unmovable breeding sites with larvicide. We will also kill mosquito eggs in your yard as well as kill adult mosquitoes that are hiding out on your property. These services can have a lasting effect and will affect surrounding properties as well. If eggs never hatch, then those mosquitoes never grow up to make more mosquitoes. If adult mosquitoes don’t survive, then they can no longer lay eggs in your yard, in your neighbors’ yards, and it goes on and on.

If you are ready to have fewer mosquito bites this summer in New Jersey, consider partnering with ChemTec for lasting results.
