Cricket Identification

House crickets

House crickets are known for the loud high-pitched sounds that the males create by rubbing their forewings together at night.  House crickets reproduce fast, meaning a small infestation in your home can quickly turn into a very large infestation. House crickets are yellowish-brown in color and have 3 distinctive dark bands going across their head; house crickets are winged and can range in size from ¾ to 7/8th of an inch in length.

Cave crickets

As their name suggests, cave crickets are commonly found living inside of caves and other dark damp areas like under piles of leaves, under wood piles, and in basements and crawl spaces.  Cave crickets are light brown to dark brown in color with some dark banding on their bodies. Adults can range in size from ½ – 1 ½ inch in length. Cave crickets have enlarged hind legs, are wingless, have a humpbacked appearance, and long antennae that they use to help them travel through the dark environments that they live in.

Dangers Associated With Crickets

Crickets can be damaging to items that are located in your home.  They are scavengers and will feed on and damage items that include clothing, wallpaper, small plants, and furniture.

Cricket Prevention

Crickets most often enter homes when the weather becomes too hot and dry outside.  Making changes around your property like removing piles of organic debris and making sure to place woodpiles a good distance away from your home can help to limit cricket numbers on your property.

It is important to inspect the exterior of your home and make sure that any cracks or holes in the foundation are sealed, that gaps around doors and windows are caulked, that door sweeps are installed underneath doors, and that any spaces found around utilities entering your home are sealed. Reducing humidity levels in storage areas using dehumidifiers is also a good prevention tactic, along with limiting any clutter in those areas.

Crickets don’t generally come indoors until the temperatures drop in the fall. During the cold winter months they enter a deep hibernation and some even survive being frozen! Some crickets have a short life span and only live during the warmer months.
