What Kind of Problems Do Insects Cause?

Some insect pest like termites can damage wood and your home.Beneficial in their natural outdoor environment, insects help maintain the balance of nature. They pollinate plants, stimulate plant growth by aerating the soil, keep harmful insect populations under control by eating other insects, and help keep the planet clean by recycling dead organic material. It's when insects leave their natural environments and invade your home in search of food, water and shelter that they become a problem.

  • Some insects feed on human blood like mosquitoes, bed bugs, fleas and ticks. Their bites often cause uncomfortable allergic reactions, but some carry debilitating and sometimes deadly diseases. Mosquitoes can transmit West Nile Virus, and certain tick varieties carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or Lyme Disease. Even insects that are considered merely nuisance pests, like bed bugs, can cause severe emotional trauma.

  • Many insects, including cockroaches and ants, contaminate our food supplies. As they crawl through kitchens, they transmit food-borne illnesses, including Salmonella and dysentery, on food and food preparation surfaces.

  • As they decompose, shed molt casings and insect feces become a fine dust that contaminates the air we breathe. Cockroaches are a main cause of asthma and upper respiratory problems in the U.S., particularly in children and the elderly.

  • Numerous insect species sting or bite when disturbed. The stings of bees and wasps can be dangerous and even fatal, particularly to those allergic to their venom.

  • Cockroaches, ants, silverfish and crickets can damage books, clothing, wallpaper and furnishings.

  • Termites, carpenter ants and carpenter bees can cause significant structural damage, even structural collapse, to homes, porches, decks and other structures.

What Are Insects?

We are the New Jersey ant control and carpenter ant control experts.Insects are the most diverse group of animals on the planet, constituting more than half of all living organisms. Arthropods, insects have segmented bodies, supported by an exoskeleton. Insects evolve from egg to adult by either partial or complete metamorphosis. As they progress from egg to larva to pupa to adult, insects molt at each stage, shedding their exoskeleton. Discarded exoskeletons collecting in corners, under sinks or along baseboards are a sign of insect infestation. Extremely prolific, many insects progress from egg to adult in less than a month. Multiple generations are present in an infiltration and infestations can number in the thousands.

While some insects are solitary, many, notably ants, termites and bees, live in highly-structured social colonies that can cover enormous areas and house hundreds of thousands, even millions of individuals. Huge colonies develop around a single egg-laying queen and thrive through a caste system of labor in which each individual insect performs a specialized task that benefits the colony. Many insects communicate via pheromone trails that guide workers to discovered food or water sources. Find out more about the specific insect pest in New Jersey and New York.

How Do Insects Enter Your Home?

Easy access to food, water and harborage entice insects into your home. Their small size allows insects to crawl through minute cracks, just 1/16 inch wide and sometimes smaller. They may enter underground, crawling through foundation cracks. They may enter under or through doors and windows or climb up plumbing pipes and dry drain traps. Insects may follow overhanging shrubbery or tree limbs into your home. They can be carried in by pets, in bags and boxes, on secondhand furnishings or in luggage. You can even bring insects into your home on your own clothing or person.

How Can I Protect My Home From Invading Insects?

Insects enter your home in search of food and water and, particularly in the fall, in search of warm harborage. They are universally attracted to moist, dark areas and prefer to harbor in cluttered sites that provide ample hiding places.

Get rid of household pests with our insect control services. There are a number of things you can do to make your home less attractive to invading insects, including:

  • Tackle inside clutter, removing boxes, old magazines, newspapers and old clothes to eliminate insect harborage sites.

  • Weatherproof doors and windows, keep window and door screens in good repair, place fiberglass screening over roof vent pipes and crawl space vents.

  • Seal cracks, plumbing chases and electrical conduits with caulk, steel wool or expandable foam.

  • Run water in spare bathrooms, utility tubs and toilets once a week to keep traps filled.

  • Repair leaking pipes and roofs to eliminate moisture.

  • Take out kitchen trash daily. Rinse cans and bottles before recycling. Store trash containers away from house.

  • Promptly clean up spilled food and liquids, do not leave open food containers on counters or unwashed dishes in sinks.

  • Keep food in tightly sealed containers.

  • Outside, remove trash, debris and lawn litter.

  • Locate stacked firewood well away from your home.

  • Trim overhanging shrubs and tress, pruning off branches that touch the house.

  • Eliminate standing water.

  • Schedule regular inspections with a ChemTec Pest Control service professional.
