Warm Weather Exacerbates New Jersey Mosquito Problem

If the weathermen are right, the storm clouds should roll offshore this weekend and a nice spell of Indian Summer warmth should banish recent frosty temperatures. Ever since Hurricane Irene skipped up the East Coast, northern New Jersey has been battered by rainy weather as one tropical storm after another has flung nasty weather systems our way, causing flooding in their wake. Northern New Jersey counties have been fighting an intense invasion of flood water mosquitoes all fall.
Recent chilly temperatures have eased the local mosquito problem, but county mosquito commissions and NJ pest control experts warn that Indian Summer warmth is likely to cause millions of mosquito eggs to hatch over the next few days. Mosquitoes are expected to be particularly nasty in areas along the Passaic, Rockaway and Whippany rivers and in the Pompton Lakes area. Mosquito abatement officers in Bergen, Morris and Passaic counties report fielding an unprecedented number of mosquito complaints this fall.
New Jersey mosquitoes are known carriers and transmitters of West Nile Virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, exhaustion and body aches, although some people who contract the West Nile Virus exhibit no symptoms. In some cases, skin rashes and swollen lymph glands can occur. Illness usually occurs within 2 to 5 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito and can last for several weeks. In severe cases, West Nile Virus can lead to encephalitis, meningitis, coma, convulsions and paralysis. Young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are most at risk of contracting life-threatening symptoms.
