New Jersey Yellow Jackets Sting In The Spring

Spring is in full swing and with such so are the yellow jackets.  Yellow jackets are far more than just an annoying pest.  The sting of a yellow jacket can be very dangerous to New Jersey residents.  The two greatest risks from most insect stings and bites are allergic reaction (which may occasionally be fatal) and infection (more likely and less serious).  Unlike honey bees, which sting once before dying, yellow jackets do not have a barbed stinger and can sting multiple times.

In the springtime, the yellow jacket queen emerges with the warm weather to start a new colony.  Colonies are formed in void areas of homes and often times under the ground.  Many New Jersey residents are stung when they are completing the simple task of moving their lawn.  Unbeknownst to them, they happen over a nest and out come the yellow jackets in full force and in full attack mode.  It is not uncommon to be stung over ten times when you run over a nest that is under the ground.  A yellow jacket sting is very painful and the poison can be deadly to some people.  Each year thousands of American’s need emergency care when they are stung by yellow jackets.

According to the New Jersey Pest Management Association, residents are advised to “let the professionals deal with these species because they tend to mobilize swiftly and sting anyone who disturbs their nests.”

If you find a yellow jacket nest at your home in Bergen County, NJ; Essex County, NJ; Hudson County, NJ; Passaic County, NJ; Morris County, NJ; Union County, NJ; and Rockland County, NY and all points in between, contact a licensed pest control company in New Jersey before the nest becomes too large and the stings a plenty!
