Posted on 09.22.11 in Bees, Wasps, Yellow Jackets, New Jersey Pest Control
Taking steps to prevent New Jersey bee and wasp attacks and knowing what to do if you are attacked can keep you safe as you perform outdoor chores around your home and in the garden. To stay safe when bees start buzzing, follow these bee safety tips from NJ pest control experts:
-
Be aware of your surroundings when outdoors. Watch for bee activity such as bees flying into a hole in the ground or exiting a crack in a building.
-
Make a monthly inspection of your house and property. If you spot a bee or wasp nest, stay clear and call a NJ pest control company for safe removal.
-
Be alert for bee activity when cleaning gutters, picking up yard and garden debris or stacking wood.
-
After bee removal, caulk cracks and crevices and fill in holes to keep bees from returning.
-
Keep your yard free of debris.
-
Wear light-colored clothing outdoors. Bees are drawn to dark colors. If you have dark hair, cover it with a light-colored scarf or hat.
-
Avoid wearing floral or citrus-scented grooming products.
-
If bees attack, immediately run from the area as quickly as possible and keep running. Bees can achieve speeds of 12 to 15 mph and have been known to chase victims more than a quarter mile. However, most healthy humans can outrun bees.
-
Grab a towel, jacket or blanket or use your shirt to cover your face and head and as much of your body as possible while you run away. Stings to the face and eyes and the most serious and painful.
-
Take refuge in the nearest shelter (house, tent, car, etc.)
-
Do not jump into water; you’ll be stung when you come up to breathe.
-
If you have been stung multiple times or experience pain or swelling or have trouble breathing, get medical help immediately.
